Canes Stomp Eagles In Big East Opener
Chestnut
Hill, Mass (AP) - Larry Coker has learned not to panic with his
third-ranked Miami Hurricanes.
Frank Gore had 221 total yards, and Miami erased a sluggish start with a frenzied
finish to beat Boston College 52-25 Saturday afternoon.
"Just another day at the office," said Coker, whose team has started
off fast going 4-0 and scoring 50+ points in three out of the four games played so far
this year.
The Hurricanes (4-0, 1-0 Big East) trailed Boston College 6-3 in the first quarter but
scored three touchdowns during a three-minute span of the fourth quarter to hold off the
Eagles in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated.
"They got the momentum on their side, and it was like a freight train running
downhill," Boston College quarterback Brian St. Pierre said. "It's tough to
stop, but we put them in that position. We have to blame ourselves."
The Eagles nearly upset the 'Canes two years ago, but Matt Walters intercepted a pass
on a first-and-goal play with about 30 seconds to play. Ed Reed grabbed the ball from
Walters and ran 80 yards for a touchdown and an 18-7 victory. Since this play, some bad
blood has builted between the two schools. The Canes where penalized five times on
Saturday for Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties. It seemed every trip into the endzone
wether it was the offense or defense, somebody in a Miami uniform was celebrating. This
didn't sit well with the Boston College players, coaching staff or fans.
Head
coach for the Boston College Eagles voiced his opinions in a press conference after the
loss on Saturday. "They acted like a bunch of thugs today. I have never seen this
kind of poor sportsmanship the entire time that I have been into coaching and college
football" said O'Brien.
When Hurricanes coach Larry Coker was asked to comment about what O'Brien said, Coker
declined to lash back but only would say "Tom is a excitable kind of guy. He is
upset right now about how his team performed today. I am sure that after a couple of days
he will calm down and things will be alright" said Coker.
The Hurricanes will return back home to face West Virginia this coming Saturday
afternoon in the Orange Bowl.
Miami must keep focus and not overlook West Virginia with the Noles game right around
the corner. If Miami gets caught looking ahead to the game with Florida State, their
dreams of heading back to the National Championship game could all come crashing down this
weekend.
